The Importance of Brewing Ingredients If You are Making Your Own Beer at Home

It is a fact that people find it fun and educational in performing home brewing beer with the process involved. Know that there are several ways a home brewer can produce his or her own home brewed beer, and know also that there are basic ingredients that you must know and include as you home brew your beer. Malt, hops, yeast, sugars and water are the basic ingredients when you home brew beer.

The most commonly used malt is the barley malt, and this is the first most basic home brewing ingredient. There are other kinds of ingredients that can be considered too such as rice and corn, however, these are not the preferred ones. There are two different types of barley malt that you should know, and these are 2-row malt and 6-row malt, where the larger grains and less husk is the 2-row malt.

The beginning of the whole malting process starts by a simple steeping of grains until they come to a germination mode, then dry them quickly. As the home brewing process, the enzymes, which changes starches to sugars, will start to move as steeping or mash starts.

The flavors, aromas and bitterness that the beer is known for in the past 1,000 years are brought about by the next ingredient which is the hops. As the home brewing process in undergoing, these hops act as the balancing factor because of the special oils that they released during the process. There are different levels of acidity of hops, and these can be bought in pellet, leaf or whole hop forms.

Our next ingredient for home brewing is yeast of which can be classified in two types, and these are the ale and lager yeasts. By the characteristics that these two yeasts give to the end product of your home brewed beer is where you can determine their differences. According to experienced home brewers, if you use ale yeasts you will have much more floral aroma of your beer and it will be much easier to handle during fermentation stage. The lager yeast on the other hand would require much lower temperatures to ferment and will give the floral aroma similar to that of the ale.

Be informed that most yeasts are produced commercially and can be bought in dry or liquid form for the home brewers.

Another essential ingredient to home brewing is water which is important in the sense that it can affect the outcome of your end product. Be aware that water can come in different contents, like water in some areas may have more mineral than the water in another place, of which would affect that style of beers.

As for the sugar ingredient of your home brewed beer, know that its content will affect the taste and alcohol level of your beer.
